England, 1839: Charles Darwin married his cousin, the Brits started the First Opium War and the world’s first commercial electric telegraph came online. Do you know what else happened that year? Dr. William O’Shaughnessy of indica fame presented the paper “On the Preparations of the Indian Hemp, or Gunjah” and introduced the cannabis-tincture preparation that quickly came into vogue in apothecary shops. Several decades later, brand-name cannabis tinctures hit the market courtesy of H.K. Mulford (Merck & Co.), Parke Davis (Pfizer), Eli Lilly, Squibb & Sons (Bristol-Myers-Squibb), Upjohn and many other pharmaceutical companies. Prohibition did away with the cannabis tinctures in the pharmacies, but the product remained in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia until the 1940s. In the spirit of prohibition pushback, it’s high time to bring the tincture back!

Were there goji berries in the original recipe? Probably not, but the following Smoking Pot merges traditional and modern preparations for an old school high with new school flair. This alcohol-based serum has concentrated amounts of cannabinoids like THC and CBD, and it can be taken topically on the skin or placed under the tongue. Unlike the long waits from an edible, the effects of the tincture begin in about 15 minutes. Queen Victoria eventually knighted Dr. O’Shaughnessy for his work on… the telegraph?… but we’re certain he’s much more proud of his work in cannabis.

    1. You can to increase the amount of THC but the cannabinoids will dissolve
into the alcohol over time without it. Most recipes don’t require it.
      Thanks for the input!
